The College Guru™️
Dartmouth Girl. Duke MBA. Renaissance Woman. Daring Greatly.

Hello! I’m Geanine Thompson, also known as The College Guru™️.
I’m obsessed with all things related to the college admissions and application process!

For over a decade, I have been working with families, like yours, to help you successfully navigate the college admissions process. It is my superpower. And I can help your ambitious child find his/hers/theirs!

I loved college and found my time at Dartmouth to be transformative. I want your child to also enjoy a life-changing college experience.

I Work with Ambitious Students
I am not afraid of the A-word – ambition! I work with smart, hard-working high-achieving students who have set big goals for themselves. They know what they want and look to me to help them get there because I have walked the path to success, again and again and again.

Accepted to My First Choice Ivy League and Ivy Plus Schools
I have always set gargantuan goals for myself. Imagine my surprise that upon hearing them, people would tell me they were things I should not want and could not have. Fortunately, I ignored them. I was accepted to and graduated from Dartmouth College and Duke University, the Fuqua School of Business, both my first-choice schools.

Right out of college, I snagged a coveted spot as an editorial assistant in book publishing at the Berkley Publishing Group (now part of Penguin Random House). As an editorial assistant and then assistant editor, I was a key decision-maker in buying and editing important books for Berkley. I LOVE BOOKS! I did then and I do now. While at Berkley I discovered that I enjoyed reading about personal finance – stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. I started reading everything that came across my desk on the topic and that led me to an unexpected yet exciting place, Wall Street.

Unlike most counselors, I know what it is like to work in industries outside of the education space – Wall Street Firms, Non-Profits, and Start-Up Entrepreneurship. I will prepare your child with the know-how to compete to get into their dream school, find their dream internship, and create their dream life. No limits!

The Teen Years
Yet before I ever heard of Wall Street, I was the kid who read several books a week, the one with the flashlight under the blanket, reading all-night or at least until I was caught by my mom or dad. I spent my high school summers at a college-sponsored STEM enrichment program for future engineers. I was also the theatre kid who started out by being asked as a third grader to be a principal cast member in the fourth-grade play – the Wicked Witch in The Wizard of Oz. (Imagine my cred on the playground!) That led to being asked to star in several college plays while in high school, more in college, and as an adult, being invited to host an on-going segment on an NBC lifestyle show, showing American how to get organized!

I possess a rare combination of being balanced in both the right and left brain; I am creative as well as analytical. I have several passions and have been successful and personally satisfied in my pursuit of all of them.

What Parents & Students Are Saying

The Wall Street Years
I loved publishing, but the pace was slow, the pay was dismal, so I hung up my publishing hat and headed to Wall Street. During those years, I was selected as one of 7 MBAs in the nation for JP Morgan Chase’s prestigious Retail Management Development Program and became an industry pioneer by building Chase’s Credit Card Retention program along with my colleague Andy. This initiative was critical to the credit card unit’s success as we were able to make millions for the bank by grabbing and retaining market share from Citi and other credit card competitors. Several years later, I moved to another bank and was hired to be the Co-Head of a Remediation Team tasked with keeping a global American-based bank from being shut down by the Federal Reserve. Their doors were kept open and I was promoted to Senior Vice President!

Working with me means your child will learn the ins and outs of highly selective college admissions as well as life skills about how the real world works. We will build their brand and make them formidable competitors. Because that is what it takes to succeed in college admissions and beyond.

Building Game Plan: College
While designing strategy and building world-class marketing programs for Wall Street behemoths, I also continued to craft selective college admissions programs via my work with Judge Judy’s Her Honor Mentoring Program and the Young Women’s Leadership School in East Harlem. As Wall Street started showing signs of the jitters, I made a lifestyle change and moved to Durham, home of the famed Research Triangle and my alma mater, Duke.

Geanine Thompson and Coach K

There, I became the Founding Director of Game Plan: College at Coach K’s foundation (of Duke basketball), at the Emily Krzyzewski Center. I designed this program from the ground up and launched the only open college access program in the Research Triangle. During my 2-year tenure as Director, any Durham high school student could walk through the open doors to participate in interactive workshops. They could also chat with Teen Advisors who were trained by me to become peer-to-peer advisors and coaches who learned to deliver Best-In-Class, one-on-one advising on the college admissions process. It is my legacy and gift to Durham.

I have a lifetime of commitment and passion for college admissions counseling, having worked in the space for over a decade and guided hundreds of students to college admissions success. My student acceptances include competitive schools such as Dartmouth, U Penn, Brown, Georgetown, Williams, Wellesley, Smith, flagship state schools, and more.

How We Begin
Our initial work will involve uncovering your child’s unique superpower(s) and brand story, one-on-one. The process is individualized to bring out the unique facets of your child from a different point of view. I will help your teen conceptualize and create a compelling, authentic narrative. As I know through my experience and proven results, your brand is the key to standing out during admissions reviews and the foundation for stellar essays. Everything flows from the unique brand and how convincingly it is presented to target schools. The student will own the process as he/she/they uncovers his/her/their voice and discovers his/her/their best self.

Your child has a dream it will require a lot of hard work. I am excited about their journey, looking forward to the prospect of partnering with them, and sharing my deep expertise and personal knowledge in the college admissions and success space.
